Our tips for painting a cat

With these tips, you can easily paint a cat. Read all the points carefully.

• If you don’t know what the house tiger should look like, find a few pictures of cats that you like. Choose a template and place it next to you as you draw.
• Prepare all materials before you begin. Then you can work undisturbed on your picture.
• Take the time you need for the picture. After all, you don’t have to rush it.
• Don’t press the auxiliary shapes and lines too hard, otherwise they’ll be difficult to erase and show up. However, you can then strongly redraw the contours.
• When your sketch is ready, compare it to your template. Is there anything different in the template than in your picture? Now is the best time to adjust everything, because then you’ll start contouring?
• Prepare several motifs and paint them with different fur colors. There are many different coat colors and patterns, such as a gray or tabby version.

How to draw a cat step by step

Drawing a cat is not as difficult as you might think. The following explains how you can easily design a fluffy house tiger. This is a great job on rainy days or when school is out. Below you will also find a simpler guide. This is also great for preschool.

1. First the auxiliary forms

You start with a long and rather thin oval and in its lower half, you put a circle that is wider than the oval. At the top, draw a small, horizontal oval for the head. Finally, draw a horizontal line through the middle of the head.

2. Ovals and Triangles

Now put a small triangle on the left and right of the head for the ears. At the bottom, place four small ovals next to each other. These will be the paws later.

3. Draw your cat’s legs

With two simple strokes, you can give your velvet paw legs. To do this, start with the line of the circle in the oval and then draw a line to the left and right to the inner points of the small paws.

4. Don’t forget the tail

A tail is now placed on the right side of the animal. To do this, first, draw a curved line that curves downwards. Then you add another line a little lower and connect it with the bent-down end of the first one.

5. Eyes and Nose

Now place a small circle on the left and right of the auxiliary line from the beginning. A little further down is a small triangle turned upside down for the nose. A straight line bifurcating left and right makes the mouth.

6. Add details

Now you give the cat slightly more pointed eyes and the typical pupil shape. In addition, there are several strokes for whiskers and eyebrows on both sides. Add a curved line to the ears. Finally, you paint two lines on each of the paws for the toes.

7. Trace the contours

Your sketch is finally done! Now you can trace the contours. The contours can be a bit more jagged and irregular, then it looks as if your house cat has fur. This procedure is particularly suitable for the face, tail, and sides.

8. The last step: color

Your picture is almost done! Now you just add some color. You can experiment with a wide variety of colors because there are dozens of different fur colors. Why don’t you just start painting the next cat and give it a different coat color?

Customize basic shapes

Did you enjoy drawing a cat and want to try more? Then try to replace the basic shapes you used at the beginning with others. That’s called stylizing. You change the shapes at your discretion and thus present your motif differently than it is found in reality. How about a triangle instead of a circle? Or a diamond instead of an oval? Draw a simple cat

If you found it difficult to draw the cat, try this easier variant. Here you first draw two circles of different sizes that merge into one another. It is important that the upper circle is smaller. Then add two small ovals at the bottom of the larger circle and triangles at the top, similar to the other instructions. Now you draw four lines for the front legs. Next, you give the cat a tail. To do this, draw two horizontal, parallel lines to the side and connect them with a semicircle. Now you can give her a face. Draw two circles on the face and add perpendicular pupils. An inverted triangle makes the nose. Finally, you can paint them. And you’re done!
